Penloc® Structural Adhesives FAQ's

Can I use Penloc® to bond any substrate?
Penloc® will bond just about any material combination with the exception of low surface energy materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene. It is suitable for bonding most metals, plastics, Acrylic, carbon fibre, modern composites, GRP, wood, glass, stone, marble, Corian® and so much more. Bond strength testing achieve 276kg/cm² on steel to steel substrates.
Can I use Penloc® for indoor as well as outdoor applications?
Yes, Penloc® will tolerate usual weathering and temperatures from -55°C to +200° depending on the grade used. For more specific information please refer to individual product technical datasheets.
Does the adhesive smell?
Standard Penloc® 1:1 does have an odour. However, Penloc® 1:1R is non-odour and is ideal for working in areas with limited ventilation or on-site work where an odour is not desirable.
Can I use it to bond metals that require powder coating afterwards?
Penloc® HP is designed specifically for bonding metals that require powder coating afterwards. It will tolerate 180°C and increases in strength at this temperature. Penloc® VT Plus is a thicker, longer curing adhesive that offers good gap fill properties and can also be used to bond metals that require powder coating after bonding.
How do I prepare the surfaces that I want to bond together?
All surfaces that require bonding should first be cleaned using Eurobond Surface Cleaning Wipes (isopropyl impregnated) to remove any oil, grease or dirt, then lightly abraded and then cleaned again to remove any dust or debris. Do not use meths, white spirits or aromatic cleaners as these will leave a microscopic film on the substrate which will contaminate the bond line and act as a barrier preventing the adhesive from adhering properly to the surface. We also recommend using Protective Nitrile Gloves when handing adhesives.
Do I need to use a mixer nozzle with the adhesive?
For critical bonding we would recommend using a Minimixer nozzle fitted to the 12ml & 50ml cartridges. This mixes the adhesive to its optimum 1:1 ratio and will give the best adhesive performance. However for non-critical bonding you can apply the adhesive direct from the cartridge bead on bead. This is where one component flows on top of the other and starts to flow/merge into each other. When you clamp the bonded parts together this further mixes the adhesive and it will cure. However, some of its performance will be reduced.
Please note; 50ml Penloc VT Plus cartridges and 400ml cartridges take different mixer nozzles. Always check the individual product to confirm correct nozzle required.
How many mixer nozzles will I need?
This depends on each application. It is best to prepare all the surfaces first. This way you will minimise stop start production which is where you will find you use more nozzles. Depending on the grade you use, it takes about 1-2 minutes for the mixed adhesive to thicken in the nozzle and it will have to be replaced with a new one. Penloc® VT Plus will take about 10 minutes to thicken in the mixer nozzle before it has to be replaced.
